"Dear Reader,
On behalf of the HUMBOLDT consortium, I am delighted to invite you to partic ipate in the
HUMBOLDT Open Day: Geospatial Data Harmonisation in Action to be held on 28
September 2010 in Lisbon, Portugal.
The HUMBOLDT projec t has entered its final phase. The HUMBOLDT Open Day will give
you as stakeholders of INSPIRE and GMES the opportunity to get an insight into the m ain

In addition to these
showcase presentations, the partic ipants will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the
training courses available on the HUMBOLDT training platform as well as to receive
supervised hands-on experiences with the tools for data harmonisation.
The following topic s provide a short overview of the draft programme that will be presented in Lisbon:
Principles of data modelling and harmonisation
Introduc tion to the tec hnic al framework and its validation
Showcases from applic ation sc enarios that demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of
Spatial Data Infrastruc tures based on software tools and proc esses for Data Harmonisation
Training Platform Overview and Ac c ess

The HUMBOLDT Project in brief
T he four-year EU projec t HUMBOLDT c ontributes to the implementation of a European
Spatial Data Infrastruc ture (ESDI) that integrates the diversity of spatial data available for a
multitude of European organisations. T he main goal of the HUMBOLDT projec t is to enable
organisations to doc ument, publish and harmonise their spatial information. T he software
tools and proc esses c reated will demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of an
Infrastruc ture for Spatial Information in Europe as planned by the INSPIRE initiative, meeting
the goals of Global Monitoring for Environment and Sec urity (GMES).
