ABSTRACT The Sustainable Development Goals are far-reaching and efforts to realise them are bringing together a vast array of knowledge, information, and data. Such activity is a great asset; however, it comes with the formidable challenge of systematically capturing diverse understandings, and transferring these into technological solutions. If the knowledge motivating information and data acquisition, mobilisation, and analysis is well-coordinated and intelligible to digital systems, the communities pursuing the SDGs can rapidly access deep insight into the SDG process from the multiple perspectives it necessarily calls upon. This webinar will focus on our efforts to capture and coordinate stakeholder knowledge in a machine-readable and -actionable form. We will briefly explore why this effort is needed, how it is done, and the nature of its potential impacts. Most importantly, we will present the ways in which stakeholders can contribute to and shape the process.
SPEAKER Pier Luigi Buttigieg is a Data Scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Germany). His work focuses on the combination of semantics, informatics, and data analysis in aid of meaningfully mobilising ecological data and detecting structure in this complex and plastic context. He leads the Environment Ontology (ENVO; www.environmentontology.org) which aims to provide semantically consistent data standardisation across and beyond the life sciences. He also co-leads the Sustainable Development Goals Interface Ontology (SDGIO; https://github.com/SDG-InterfaceOntology/sdgio) to better link scientific output to societal goals and help create a basis for socio-ecological data science.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
