The second annual GIS for the United Nations and the International Community Conference is being held October 10-11, 2013 in New York, New York. The conference is hosted by UNITAR's Operational Satellite Application Programme (UNOSAT), the World Bank Institute, and Esri. The conference provides a collaborative environment for the UN community, intergovernmental organizations, NPOs and NGOs, foundations, government agencies, academia, and private industry to come together and discover how to use GIS and location analytics to improve effectiveness in the humanitarian system.
Technology boosts the participation of citizens in global challenges
18 September 2013, Geneva, Switzerland - Speaking in Geneva at the 2013 Open Knowledge Conference, the world’s leading annual event on open data, the CEO of the Open Knowledge Foundation, Rufus Pollock, announced that barely six months after its official launch, the open-source platform Crowdcrafting.org has grown to accommodate over 120 projects, making it the world’s most diverse open-source platform for online citizen science and crowdsourced data analysis.
Amazing technological solutions presented as UNOSAT partners with JRC to co-host workshop on Unmanned Aerial Systems for Rapid Mapping
11-13 September 2013 Geneva, Switzerland – UNOSAT and the European Commission Joint Research Centre partnered to co-organize a workshop on Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for Rapid Mapping. The event successfully brought together members of industry, academia and humanitarian actors to explore the technology´s readiness for rapid mapping and other civilian applications. The workshop spanned three days: the first day unfolded in Dardagny, Geneva, where the UASs were demonstrated and data collected; the second and third days took place at the International Environment House where post-processing presentations (day 2) and thematic sessions (day 3) awaited more than 70 participants.
UNOSAT delivers advanced training to IGAD
9 September 2013 Nairobi, Kenya - UNOSAT experts have begun delivering the third and final training of the UNOSAT-IGAD Capacity Development Project. The main objective of the professional training, which runs in Nairobi from 9 to 20 September, is to provide participants with advanced GIS and remote sensing work methodologies relevant to the various missions they perform at IGAD, the Inter-Governamental Authority on Development.
HumaNav public website launched!
As part of its HumaNav engagement on fleet tracking & management, UNOSAT has launched the HumaNav public website. This Humanitarian Navigation Solution uses the very latest technologies to provide comprehensive fleet management operations like tracking, navigation, hybrid telecommunication and data capture for the humanitarian community by using an internet platform.

21-23 August 2013, Eldoret, Kenya- Building Resilience to Climate-Related Risks was the central theme of the 35th Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 35), which took place in Eldoret, Western Kenya.
UNOSAT continues mapping effort as Sudan braces for more flooding
16 August 2013, Khartoum, Sudan - After initial flooding that killed more than 50 people in the first week of August, Sudan’s weather authorities have announced that heavy rain falling in Ethiopia is likely to cause additional flooding in Sudan. So far the floods affected 200,000 Sudanese, according to the Minister of Interior, and have prompted aid from Qatar, Egypt and Ethiopia.
